  4. Pretty sure the invention of Youtube comment sections obliterated the last of that over a decade ago.

  5. My biggest concern is that JJ Abrams has been put at the helm of Star Wars. What he's done to Star Trek is bad enough, do we really want fucking up another much-loved geek franchise? I'll give credit where it's due, at least Disney didn't hire Orci and Kurtzman to write Star Wars VII.

    1. And here I was thinking he gave a moribund franchise a much-needed shot in the arm. Silly me.

    2. Make a "'splody" action movie and pin a primarily non-action franchise's name on it.
      Instant pats on the back!

    3. And again I say, the franchise sure was doing well before that. Moron.

    4. Sometimes its best just to let things die and try something *gasp* ORIGINAL, instead of creating just another scifi action like all the rest. And calling people morons doesn't automatically validate your point.

Finally, somebody who understands why I despise the new Star Trek. As a dumb action movie, it was average at best (if you're willing to tolerate wooden acting, painful lens flare and horrible writing). As a science fiction movie it was laughable, and as a Star Trek movie it was an anathema, the very anti-thesis of the series it was attempting to revive. Yes, old Star Trek ended badly (I still think Nemesis is the worst of the movies, and Voyager and Enterprise had their problems), but the idea that any new Star Trek is better than no new Star Trek at all is just plain rubbish. Do it right, or don't do it at all.

  6. Your mileage may vary on "He fucked up a much-beloved geek franchise".

Personally, I liked Startrek 11*, so i'm pretty optimistic.

*I would even go so far as to rank it directly after Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered country in my personal ranking of the Startrek-movies.

    1. Yep, I had SO much fun in the theater for for Star Trek (2009), I'm willing to give Abrams the benefit of the doubt.

    2. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt, too. I still think that Kurtzman and Orci are the ones who did most of the damage to Star Trek, but seeing as those two hacks are colleagues of Abrams way back from Alias.....it's reasonable to speculate that they only got such a sweet job because of Abrams. Although it is equally plausible that the studio simply hired them on the basis of the box office take from the first two Transformers movies (a possibility I find more depressing than nepotism).

Back to Star Wars - I think Michael Arndt did a stellar job with Toy Story 3, so I'd argue that he's proven himself as a writer. It'll be interesting what he comes up with for Star Wars VII.
