After his friend said he wanted to read WATCHMEN...

  1. I hope he got bitch slapped immediately.

  2. I'm always baffled by this logic...so, he doesn't know that much about comics, therefore, he's not allowed to read Watchmen and subsequently learn more about comics? Isn't that kind of like saying "You don't know anything about history, so you're not allowed to read that history book"?

  3. Not to defend this douchebag, but what he SHOULD have alluded to was, that to appreciate even more, the satire in Watchmen, if you don't know or are used to the tropes of Super hero comics and stories you won't get the added enjoyment of reading the series.

Its kind of like watching the classic seasons episodes of The Simpsons. You could watch the episode "Rosebud" (from the fourth season) that spoofs the film "Citizen Kane" and enjoy it even though you may have never seen the movie, but if you have, you'd appreciate it even more.

  4. Don't take this the wrong way, but you're a jerk. So you kinda don't deserve to have friends.

  5. Wow. I'm all for more people reading comics. Especially if they want to read good comics like Watchmen.

    1. You forgot to say: "except for the prequels."

  6. Can we amend the 'Jerks' tag to occasionally rendered as 'Jerk-Off', cause this kid is a grade-A jerk-off.

  7. "Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm going to vomit directly onto your face."

  8. "Watchmen" is a closely-guarded secret among comic circles. There are only a few prints left in existence, and they're constantly under lock and key. This is why nobody has been able to adapt it into a film yet.

  9. No "shut up you idiot" tag?

  10. What an ass, he should have just told him not to read Watchmen because it's one of the most boring comic books available. A good friend would have recommended something with more than a half dozen pages worth of entertainment value.

    2. Actually, I...kind of agree. At least so far as to say I'm glad they took out most of Ozymandias' speech at the Arctic and switched out the psychic squid for Mr. Manhattan instead in the movie.

    3. I do agree. I really think Watchmen is way overrated.

    4. I guess the idea of anyone not thinking Watchmen is God's gift to comics is so far out there they *must* be trolling. Sorry Anon 4.57pm, there are people who exist that find Watchmen to be painfully boring.

  11. The way some comics fans gush over the story and dialogue and such in Watchmen (which I have read, and which I do think is good) in such a way as to make it seem like it's so amazing and special, it does make me sometimes wonder if any of them have read an actual BOOK, where these things are much more commonplace.

It's like if someone's only eaten McDonalds and then someone cooks them a basic, home-cooked meal, and it completely blows their mind, but...yeah.

    2. Agreed. I've never been much on super heroes. So everyone that knows I like comics keeps saying "You've never read WATCHMEN! Dude! You're not a comic fan if you've never read Watchmen!" So after a few years of that I got a copy and read it. Although I have to say the writing was better than 20 pages of fighting and a "KABLAM" on a page here and there, it didn't blow my mind and I could have easily gone my whole life not reading it. But I guess when it's being graded on a curve with Maximum Carnage setting the bar it has a different pop to it. If I were to recommend a super hero comic to someone who didn't read comics, I'd probably recommend Watchmen second or third.

    4. For me, part of what makes Watchmen special is the way it tells its story. The story itself is good, and the dialogue is good, but what really sets it apart is that it tells these in a way only a comic can. Moore and Gibbons knew how to work the medium, and it really strengthened the message. That's what makes it a great book, in my opinion. There are many books better than Watchmen, but so few are good in the way that Watchmen is good.

  12. I parse this as meaning "You don't read comics all the time, and don't have to put up with as many crap books as the rest of us. You can't just cherry-pick all the good stuff."

Still dumb, but I appreciate the frustration. I wish someone would separate the wheat from the chaff for me too.

  13. Is that a copy of Batman: The Killing Joke you have in your filthy casual mitts? Not so fast there boy wonder..

  14. Honestly, no one deserves to read Watchmen. It's a punishment, not a reward.
