If it truly wasn't sexist, gender would have no bearing on who wins or loses. If the statement goes "Because the character is (MALE/FEMALE), then (BLANK) *must* happen," then it's sexist because gender is dictating actions.
Meanwhile, I think her mind would be blown if she read Y : the Last Man, what with "the girl character" sometimes losing to another character who's female (a comic with more than one female character, who'da thunk it? not this idiot).
Women can be douchebags too (feminism actually says they have as much the right to be one than men). The guy is just dating one.
A good title would rather be "You should date a feminist instead of a douchebag". Good thing is, this comic could be both about men and women dating douchebags. And the comic could then be shamed as being discriminatory, becuase the douchebags would always loose.
You are pretty conservative, OVC dude. It's showing a lot lately. But whatever floats your boat, man.
(This is my way of saying that, yeah, that person doesn't exist, and reducing the argument of 'Women in Refrigerators' to some ridiculous extreme is silly.)
So you're claming that OVC is more or less made up, and that the artist does this to push his political agenda?
OR maybe, just maybe, some people just say weird stuff? I mean, we're on the internet. In these very thread, you have no doudt seen people say bonkers stuff.
Good lord, you're just as bad as the woman in the comic. Sorry to burst your bubble but women like that really do exist.
As to Mr. Tim's politics, he's played it neutral. He could have tagged today's comic with "delusional feminist bitch" or "shut up you idiot" or anything else that might betray his own political bias, but instead he settled for a lone "crazies". Which she is.
You say political agenda, I say imagination and opinions. He's a human being too.
I always thought he's hearing or reading various crazy and coloring it up, enhancing for humor, adding appropriate shirts, etc. The illusion of reality is very important for this comic to work properly, though, so this should never be discussed too much ;)
But have you gone through the archives? There aren't so many people coming to comic stores today, let alone so many crazy/strange people.
Anonymous @ 2/04/2013 1:59 PM: Are you joking? Have you ever been inside a comic shop? Or a gaming shop or hobby shop or any niche retailer? Or WalMart for that matter?
Ever since I started reading this comic, I've also started listening in to other people at my FLCS. If anything the crazies (and idiots) are multiplying. And getting crazier.
Anonymous 2/04/2013 2:03 PM: It's definitely your bubble. Try stepping out of it and into the real world some time.
As far as people like this not existing, or "there aren't that many crazy people in a comic shop"... all I can say is the guy that runs the comic shop I visit doesn't find this comic remotely funny or interesting, not because he thinks it's made up,but because it's all stuff he hears every single day.
Anonymous2/04/2013 2:15 PM Start a blog. It's what I did. No drawing skill necessary! If there's one thing the internet lacks, its stories without a point.
Working in the social services field has taught me one thing, people like this do exist. And breed.
I can tell you, the world isn't going to end via something cool like machines gaining sentience, a zombie apocalypse or even an asteroid ploughing into the planet.
No. It's going to be destroyed by people like this breeding. She has 11 children that think like this, then they each have 11 children that think like this, and so on... and on and on.
Until the world is full of people that are unnecessarily aggressive. And stupid.
Now, what if it's a comic where a woman is fighting a gay man? Does her firm stance still hold? And isn't that persecuting LGBT persons? And what if the woman wants something bad, like to kill a kitten, like a Captain Planet villain? There are too many variables to take into account!!!
Mr. Tim left out the clarifier from under the comix.
Is she...
A = A mother talking to a child?
B = A girlfriend talking to a boyfriend?
C = A girlfriend talking to a girlfriend?
D = Talking to her reflection in the display case trying to pump herself up not to give in and buy a comix because she has tingling feeling is her groin that are opposed to everything she holds near and dear to her self belief that men drool and women rule?
...you know...when you have comics that give girls broken spines for "teh sexies" i think her priorities are in the wrong place is shes really concerned with sexism
Isn't it equally sexist to have a comic where only girls can win? If you want to be totally equal, the girl should win exactly half the time.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't think those kinds of concerns should dictate the story.
If it truly wasn't sexist, gender would have no bearing on who wins or loses. If the statement goes "Because the character is (MALE/FEMALE), then (BLANK) *must* happen," then it's sexist because gender is dictating actions.
DeleteShh! You all are making too much sense!
DeleteI agree with you, and I'm female myself. :D
DeleteMeanwhile, I think her mind would be blown if she read Y : the Last Man, what with "the girl character" sometimes losing to another character who's female (a comic with more than one female character, who'da thunk it? not this idiot).
No COIE #7 for you!
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to the good old days when MJ sat around waiting for Peter to get home from web slinging.
ReplyDeleteNew "girlfriends", aisle 3!
ReplyDelete18+ only!
What if it's two girl characters battling each other? And they're both heroines? Power Girl vs Wonder Woman, for example?
ReplyDeleteThat would be just as bad, because it's clearly just men drawing catfights to satisfy their fantasies. Because that's TOTALLY what sexism is.
DeleteSomeone should make a comic called "So You're Dating an Ultra Feminist"
ReplyDeleteNah, she's no more a feminist than Elijah Muhammad was a civil rights activist.
DeleteWomen can be douchebags too (feminism actually says they have as much the right to be one than men). The guy is just dating one.
DeleteA good title would rather be "You should date a feminist instead of a douchebag". Good thing is, this comic could be both about men and women dating douchebags. And the comic could then be shamed as being discriminatory, becuase the douchebags would always loose.
How desperate would you have to be to keep dating someone who acts like that?
ReplyDeleteDesperate, or a sadist? Some dudes just like a lady to push them around.
Delete> Sadist
DeleteThe word you were thinking of is "masochist".
The only family that she ever had was her seven horny brothers and a drunk-ass dad.

DeleteI've seen only angry men expressing the opinion from the comic. Sarcastically.
But maybe that's just my bubble, as you say.
Have...have you EVER worked retail?
DeleteI could write several years of comics with true stories about customers at the mom & pop video game store I used to work at.
But...I can't draw worth a poop.

It's a bad combo.
Oh, look, our first stupid Social Justice Warrior of the day.

What brand of Tin Foil is your hat made out of?

ReplyDeleteLadies and Gentlemen, this is why America is losing!
ReplyDeleteWe need to look beyond gender.
ReplyDeleteSexist is where women don't have the same opportunities to lose that men do.
ReplyDeleteI've seen the OVC, who the fuck would date this?
ReplyDeleteOH MAN, I WOULD TOTALY TAP THAT! IT WOULD BE....

wait for it...
SUBLIME!!!!!!
Both of the remaining Sublime fans have been in Mr. Tim's store.
ReplyDeleteI assumed that she was talking to her kid rather than a boyfriend or girlfriend. And that makes her statement even worse, IMHO.
ReplyDeleteCool comments thread.
ReplyDelete"...I don't want you reading it."
ReplyDeleteCripes...if my MOTHER said that to me, she'd be disowned...a girlfriend would be out on her ass SSSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO quick.....

For the sake of enjoying the comic, I think we have to assume that these are all things that were actually said in the store.
