To her boyfriend regarding the comics he was about to buy...

  1. Personally, I think it's adorable when my boyfriend reads superhero comics.

  2. Another embarrassing thing he does - he takes her out in public. Seriously dude, dump this shrew. Women are like comic books. There's a new one to try every month.
I like to imagine that the people portrayed in these cartoons can hear my comments.

  3. Everyday, I am amazed by the amount of non-comic book reading fucking weird-os you get in your shop.

  4. I bet you all feel pretty silly right about now!

  5. Why Mr. Tim keeps a comment section going with the illiterate trolls that have begun to congregate here, I do not know. He is a better man than I.

  6. Why do I feel that the second panel to most of these is someone getting a boot to the face?

  7. But seriously! Superman-Girl!

  8. Yes, because it's not as though you can't do a sufficient job of embarrassing yourself by making idiotic comments in public, you witch...

I've been called a lot of things, but "illiterate" is a new one.
Yes, there are a group of regulars who enjoy posting snarky comments on here. It's our way of having fun and maybe a laugh or two. Generally, I find it to be a fun place without the anger and bitterness that permeates some of the other comic sites. Or at least until recently.
If the comments annoy you so much, feel free to not click on them. Just enjoy the cartoon and move on.

  10. "Better man than I" huh? Are we new to the English language totally, or just its grammar? I find it's best if you're going to make a comment on someone's education that YOURS be sparkling clean, pally.

  11. As a linguist, I can tell you that "he is a better man than I" actually is correct, Tiger. It being shorthand for "he is a better man than I am." Technically speaking, you can't really say "he is a better man than me" since "me" is the object tense, but there is no transitive verb (a verb that takes an object) in the sentence.
However, descriptivists (like me) tend to be much more lenient as they figure, "everyone says it, so just go with the flow." So, even though something like "a better man than me" is ungrammatical, we just let it slide.

  12. ...but most of the time, the comments suggest those making "snarky" comments didn't understand the joke... work on that.

No, the ones making the snarky comments are building upon the foundation that has been laid (heh) for them in order to achieve a...punchline climax, if you will.
It's the angry commenters - the ones who are angry at the people portrayed in the cartoon, or angry at "the illiterate trolls" (to borrow a clever turn of phrase to describe us regulars) - who don't get the joke.

  14. I don't think most people here are illiterate trolls. I think its sad there are a few such as ZJS or anyone who spends time commenting that Mr. Tim is "repeating" himself, etc... Entitlement in the comment section of free entertainment is sad and ugly.

But its also clear from comments that some (certainly not all) may believe they're building on the foundation of the joke, but that they didn't get the joke to begin with.

And, thank you, Ross K. Wolfe. May we all enjoy good grammar and common phrases.

  15. Well, I'm glad that's over and dealt with.

  16. Yuck - what in the heck happened here? We were doing our usual thing and then some weird troll vortex rolled through bitching about literacy. What, was the whole "he draws cartoons that we enjoy and snark about" too complex for you? Did you need to add lions with machine guns, too?

  17. I don't think she's a total loss. She did say 'superhero comics' and not just 'comics'. She'd be wrong in that nobody reads them, but I can't completely disagree with her attitude. Nearly gave up on the whole ridiculous mess myself, once.

  18. It's true. I don't read superhero comic books anymore. I wait for the trade paperbacks to come out.

  19. I think anyone, male or female, that would pursue a relationship with someone that's supposed to be intimate, but spends their time tearing that person down down for things that are important to them - whatever those things may be - is a "total loss." No two peoples' interests are going to intersect perfectly, but you do what you can to meet them halfway, you find points of common interest, and you encourage them. My wife and I have a LOT of stuff in common, but she's not my clone, and as hot as the thought of it is, I wouldn't want to date my clone.

  20. She's wearing a '70s T-shirt she got from Hot Topic or some place similar, so it's not as if she really cares what people think.

(Yes, I know that Bowie is still around and is still recording, and we all want to like what he does, but, let's be honest, we can only claim that each new album as "the best thing since 'Scary Monsters'" so many times before we have to face the truth: nothing since then has been close to Scary Monsters, and that album is only good in comparison to everything that has come after. He hasn't done anything exceptional since "The Lodger". Either the shirt is a retro-'70s thing or she has no taste in music.)

(Yes, I made the comment about her just so I could write the Bowie rant.)

  21. There is no such thing as an inappropriate time for a Bowie rant. Fire at will.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So because Bowie's later albums weren't that great that makes his good albums shitty, or what? You can't appreciate Bowie's earlier work?

  23. About an hour after I posted I realized I had told a lie, but I've been at work, so I couldn't get back here sooner to correct myself.
While most of what I said was true, the grammatical principle has nothing to do with transitive verbs. It has to do with the fact that there were two separate clauses in the sentence. The confusion of pronoun case in such situations is so common, though, that only the strictest of traditional proscriptivists would raise a fuss over using the object case instead of the subject case.

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

  24. If this is the kind of place this is going to turn into, I'll just be seeing myself quietly out the back.

  25. So someone wakes a comment about a trollfest and it turns into a a trollfest. who knew that would happen?

  26. @Michael

  27. WOOOO Party etc check out the magumbos on them suffragists! Uh.

Yeah, let's not be comic book nerds up ins.

  28. You missed my point, Anonymous. She's bitching about something nobody does any more while wearing a shirt based on what someone did thirty-five years ago.

  29. I must say that the comments section here is a lot like a DVD extra. More fun for everyone. :P
