After looking through Alex Ross' MYTHOLOGY book...

Getting paid to do something that you love?
Yep. Sounds like a real waste of time.

  3. Yeah, I guess he's right. Ross should dump comics and
    • Illustrate movie posters-
oops, they don't use artist illustrations on movie posters anymore.
    • Well, Ross should dump comics and sell illustrations to magazines-
oops, magazines are dying and disappearing.
    • OK, then Ross should dump comics and make a ton a cash selling his paintings at art galleries-
oops, selling paintings in galleries can be hit-or-miss and may not bring in a steady income, like, say.... steady comic book work.

  4. I mean, *reading* an Alex Ross comic is a bit of a waste of time, to be sure.

  5. ...Jeph Jacques?

Also that statement is hilarious because Mythology oozes love of superheroes and the comic book medium from every page.

  6. "oops, selling paintings in galleries can be hit-or-miss and may not bring in a steady income"

I really think you ran out of steam with that one.

(And the newsagents I go into are crammed full of magazines)

  7. Reading an Alex Ross comic is fine. Right, well Earth X was fine at least. I guess he more directed that instead of actually writing it but...

  8. Have you ever seen his work up close? The man is an amazing painter.

  9. Because pretty much anyone actually involved in the art world places comic books and such at the very lowest of the low on the ladder.
Well... with anime a rung lower than that...

  11. @Anonymous: "I really think you ran out of steam with that one."

As an artist myself, with many artist friends, I assure you it ain't easy making a living getting placed in and selling artwork in a gallery.

As for there being newsagents crammed with magazines, well sure. But how many of them feature artwork/illustrations rather than photographs?

  14. "Have you ever seen his work up close? The man is an amazing painter." - So tracing Norman Rockwell and putting capes on everyone and making them look fat and old and having no dynamism at all makes someone an "amazing" painter now? Huh.

  15. Also, the only reason Earth X was worth bothering with is because John Paul Leon drew it.

  16. I agree with Lugh. Alex Ross is by far one of the most over appreciated creators in all of comics. His line work is impressive, but it's just boring. Plus his slavish fervor for the Silver Age borders on the asinine, especially when it comes to Jack Kirby (who was good- just not the definitive comic powerhouse he's been made out to be,)Earth X felt like a 12 issue BJ to Reed Richards, and the plot mirrored Kingdom Come too much, as did Project :Superpowers, making me think Ross only has one story to begin with.

  17. Maybe it was the presence of the name "Alex" here, but did anyone else hear this guy as voiced by Robert Guillaume as Dr Eli Vance from HL2? ...Ooookay, just me huh? I'll shut up now...
