The deserves a "jerks" tag, too. So what if he wears it? It's not doing any harm to anyone. I'll take that over some asshole who has swear words or something controversial on their ballcap or t-shirt.
Technically, a Trilby is a sub-set of fedora, with a narrower brim. So it's not entirely incorrect to call it a fedora. More like using a generic name for a specific object. Also, fedoras aren't for kids, unless they're dressing up as Dick Tracy.
Technically, no. Absolutely wrong. Not even close, in fact, no matter what the ignorant editors of Wikipedia think. Apart from the brim, a trilby has an entirely different crown and band and trilbies can be made of a range of materials. They aren't even blocked the same way. Hell, trilbies aren't even blocked for the most part; they're stitched. Actual fedoras are always felt. Always.
So no, it is entirely incorrect to call a trilby a fedora. Just because they look superficially close to the ignorant does not make them the same. Next you'll be saying tyrols and homburgs are fedoras.
And it doesn't matter what's for kids or not. What matters is the sort of adult schmuck who wears an adventure time hat in public is also the same sort of schmuck who owns a trilby (and mistakenly calls it a fedora).
Son, it's my business to know hats. And there's nothing more annoying than some dumbass kid (hipster or just plain idiot) asking for a "fedora" when what he really wants (though god alone knows why) is some godawful unsuitable houndstooth trilby because the drummer in the should have stayed in the garage band he just discovered has the bad taste to wear one. This happens at least once a week.
Yeah so I got a trilby a while ago as a christmas present. I liked it a lot. It's a nice hat. Then, a few years later, I found out that they either had become, or maybe always were, "Hipster headwear". I like the hat but now hate wearing it just because every douche on the street automatically thinks I'm a douche because I enjoy a HAT. Fuck all ya'll. Hipsters can be assholes but so can the people instantly making judgements about others.
The fedora, named for the Victorien Sardou melodrama of 1882 (Fedora, written especially for Sarah Bernhardt), is perhaps the most versatile of hats. It is appropriate for casual day or evening wear. When first introduced, a fedora was a soft felt hat with a crown that was low and tapered and creased lengthwise with a permanently rolled brim. Today, however, most fedoras have a medium-width snap brim (a flexible brim that can be snapped up or adjusted down), with an up to two-inch band around the crown. Narrow-faced men ought to eschew wide-brimmed fedoras, as they only accentuate the thinness of the face.
The Trilby;
The trilby, or sloucher, named for heroine of an 1894 George Du Maurier novel, is simply another version of the snap-brimmed fedora. It is slightly more rigid than the fedora, streamlined, and tapered with a 3/8-to 1/2-inch band around the crown (usually of grosgrain). Originally associated with a trench coat, it evolved in the 1920's into a soft English country hat with a creased tapered crown worn with a front pinch. Appropriate for informal occasions, the edge of the brim is usually left unfinished, though it may be bound with matching grosgrain. Because of its softness, the trilby can be manipulated into a plethora of shapes. For this reason, the hat has remained popular even during times when most men felt wearing a hat was too conformist a gesture."

In other words, there is nothing at all wrong with a trilby. It is a hat well suited to casual wear. If it bothers you when your customers ask for a fedora and want a trilby, why not simply show them a few of each and tell them the correct names of the two types of hats? Seems preferable to being unpleasant on the internet, don't you think?
But then he couldn't feel all smug and superior for knowing minutia about a topic very few people care about. I mean, just because most of the other people who do know the difference would rather educate people about it is no reason to be a decent human being.
The thing that bothers me the most about this strip is the fact that someone is actually making those hats in adult sizes. This means that there's not just one or two of these gits out there, but there are enough of them to create a viable market in those hats.
The adult dude looks way more like the creator of Adventure Time http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120729205259/adventuretimewithfinnandjake/images/0/0f/Pendleton_Ward.jpg
Do you wear one of these hats? Are you over the age of ten? Do you think it makes you look all zany and individual? Do you think people give you those looks because they're jealous of your free spirit, rather than wondering who left the door of the home unlocked?
I don't think that, but is the truth that only kids should like kids' shows? Because I don't necessarily agree with that, and even so Adventure Time is barely aimed at kids.
I can't speak to the other fandoms of traditionally juvenile shows, but Adventure Time is as much aimed at children as it is at older folk.
Nothing wrong with an adult liking kids stuff or wearing a goofy hat, but kids brutal honesty is always funny. Even when it embarrasses someone. Especially when it does, in fact. It's always unintentional. Kids don't know social graces or indoor voices. They blurt out what they think and sometimes it's hilarious at someone elses expense.
I seriously loled. I even rolled a bit, but not on the floor. Couldn't agree more with that kid. And lookit the expression on the guy's face! Brilliance.
I hate when OVC comment sections devolve into pointless arguments. People seem to forget so quickly that they came here for a laugh. Just relax and enjoy the humor, guys. Great job as usual, Mr. Tim!
The next generation of OVC commenter right there.
ReplyDeleteFINALLY.
ReplyDeleteHey Beavis, that dude's a dork. Huh huh.

ReplyDeleteActually he's a kid.
DeleteI too am a grown man who gets angered by what children think of me.
Delete1) One of the best OVC's ever.
ReplyDelete2) What is that hat anyway? Does it reference some comic book-character?
I think it's Finn's hat from Adventure Time with Finn and Jake.
ReplyDeleteAnd boy, did that make me laugh out loud.
This is one of the best drawings. mrtim did a great job on the older guy's facial expression. I died laughing.
ReplyDeleteWhen I see a grown man wearing a hat like that I just know it's only because he left his trilby (that he calls a fedora) at home.

...The More You Know!
DeleteHAHA HE SAID FEDORA
DeleteYou sure know a lot about Hipster headwear for a guy calling this dude a dick.
DeleteZing! Anon at 7:20 just won the comments.

Someone does not know the difference between "annoyance" and "problem". Learn English, kid.

DeleteWow, you know hats, pedantry, AND how to be a dick on the internet! Man, what school should I attend in order to get a triple degree like THAT?
DeleteWhy bother? You've clearly already got a masters in whiny smug entitled anti-intellectual ignorance.
DeleteThis thread delivers.
DeleteBoo-hoo-hoo I've got customers but they dont know as much about the product as i do. Why oh why can't better people buy my stock?!

Deleteisn't that basically the premise of OVC? doesn't surprise me in the least that people post comments that reflect the same attitude.

DeleteI hope he was talking about the one guy who thought he was too mature for all of the girls in the area.
ReplyDeleteAdventure Time is ok, I guess... It's BRONYS that creep me right the fuck out.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that bothers me the most about this strip is the fact that someone is actually making those hats in adult sizes. This means that there's not just one or two of these gits out there, but there are enough of them to create a viable market in those hats.
DeleteThat does not bode well for this country.
Maybe it's homemade, made by and for the guy wearing it, instead of mass-produced for a viable market?
DeleteMaybe... But probably not.
DeleteThe adult dude looks way more like the creator of Adventure Time http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120729205259/adventuretimewithfinnandjake/images/0/0f/Pendleton_Ward.jpg
ReplyDeleteNeeds “jerks” tag.
ReplyDeleteDo you wear one of these hats? Are you over the age of ten? Do you think it makes you look all zany and individual? Do you think people give you those looks because they're jealous of your free spirit, rather than wondering who left the door of the home unlocked?
DeleteOr perhaps one might wear that sort of hat because they enjoy the series and think it's fun? Or because they like to be recognised by other fans?
DeleteOr perhaps you think that anyone who says a truth that's not easy to hear is a jerk?
DeleteI don't think that, but is the truth that only kids should like kids' shows? Because I don't necessarily agree with that, and even so Adventure Time is barely aimed at kids.
DeleteI can't speak to the other fandoms of traditionally juvenile shows, but Adventure Time is as much aimed at children as it is at older folk.
I probably wouldn't wear the hat but I enjoy the show.
DeleteNo, I don’t wear that kind of hat, or even watch the show. I just thought the kid was being rude. The person in front of him has feelings, after all.
DeleteNothing wrong with an adult liking kids stuff or wearing a goofy hat, but kids brutal honesty is always funny. Even when it embarrasses someone. Especially when it does, in fact. It's always unintentional. Kids don't know social graces or indoor voices. They blurt out what they think and sometimes it's hilarious at someone elses expense.
DeleteIf the kid gets a "jerk" tag, the dude gets a "manchild" one too.
Delete"I don't think that, but is the truth that only kids should like kids' shows?"
DeleteIf only kids should like kids' shows, then that would totally suck for their adult supervision staying aware of what media the kids consume.
IRL it makes perfect sense to also try to not bore their parents/guardians/babysitters/etc. to death while trying to entertain children...
Don't forget that it's not KIDS making these cartoons... As an animator, I really like watching cartoons cause i hope to MAKE them one day...
DeletePlease tell me after the kid said that the guy slowly raised his head and made that face.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite comment threads ever.
ReplyDeleteBEST. OVC. EVER.
ReplyDeleteI seriously loled. I even rolled a bit, but not on the floor. Couldn't agree more with that kid. And lookit the expression on the guy's face! Brilliance.
and the guy appears to be reading a comic book. those are for kids, too.
ReplyDeleteDepends on what comic he's reading. Something tells me it's not anything like Watchmen or Maus.
