Following his friend's long, furious, rambling criticism on the stupidity of the TWILIGHT movies...

  1. Wow. That is probably the most intelligent I've heard on the internet in some time.

  2. Even dismissing the 'Not in the market' argument, there's still plenty in the Twilight books and movies to get legitimately furious about, primarily how it has that nasty subconscious message of 'He really loves you' that could potentially make young, vulnerable women fall prey to abusive relationships.

Really, it would be more accurate to say what should make Twilight-haters mad is the equvilant of going to a birthday party, watching your friend open a present, and find out someone gave her a half-starved and rabid owl.

    1. I think you crashed through the stupidity roof and are now rocketing into stupidity space.

    2. Watch someone dump their boyfriend because 'He's not like Edward', and then get picked up by someone who recognizes someone with a need to exploit, and you'll realize stupidity doesn't even begin to cover the mosaic of human decisions.

  3. Who hates Twilight? I don't hate Twilight. I don't think anyone else hates Twilight. It's just a bad book is all. Who would waste hate on a stupid book?

It's the Twilight fans I hate. And pity. Also the author, because that Meyer girl has to be all kinds of messed up inside.

  4. The difference is, this is one birthday party no one in their right mind should be going to.

  5. Hear, hear! Honestly, the Twilight haters are a thousand times more annoying than Twilight and its fans put together. "Oh no, books not aimed at my demographic have been successful! How dare they!" "A series of novels is pushing a subtext that doesn't suit my politics! That's evil!" Seriously, just ignore it!

    1. Is it pushing a subtext that doesn't suit someone's politics? Or is it pushing a subtext that is actually damaging and antiquated? I think there's a lot of messages that Twilight sends that are evil, no matter your politics. Unless your politics support stalker boyfriends and marrying him being the thing that will complete your life. In which case, your politics are evil.

    2. All you've just said is that it doesn't suit your politics. You believe it's damaging and antiquated, but stop acting like your beliefs should be privileged as "the truth." There is plenty of fiction out there with political subtext that will be more to your liking.

    3. Explain how wonderful and life affirming and healthy the 'marrying your stalker' message is, then, rather than whine about strawmen.

    4. I like when people think "its just opinions!" will somehow change reality. A terrible message is a terrible message, no matter what your "politics" are.

  6. Society needs more Goth Chicks.

I support absolutely anything that exposes girls to Vampires and/or Witches.

    End Game!

    1. Except there's nothing Goth about Twilight at all. It's probably the first thing I've ever seen that un-gothesizes vampires.

    2. The vampires have sparkling skin. That's about as Un-Goth as it gets.

    3. It still points them in the right direction.

    4. Not really.

  7. My view on the metaphor is that people tend to keep their birthday parties private. Twilight gets spammed all over the nerdosphere and beyond. Here in Blighty I've almost been driven bonkers by trailers for one of those crap movies running almost non-stop on Channel 4.

  8. The first comment remains the only worthwhile one in this long thread. I don't care for Twilight. I also don't care for liverwurst but that doesn't give me the right to go over and crap on someone's sandwich. Those that claim the moral high ground, use that as the fence they hide behind to hurl their feces at passers by. If they truly believed that something sent the wrong message they would _actively_ devote their time to sending the correct paradigm. And considering what this site is we're reading, as a group, comics, graphic novels and manga have been sending the worst, sexist, and most reductive portrayal of women for decades, second only to porn. Of course not the comics you read; I mean those other ones that other people are reading. Yours are perfectly fine.
