  1. Never seen it, myself.

    1. That just means you don't know that you like it, yet.

  2. Light swords in space. That's how.

  3. I don't. I used to like it until the prequels. The prequels made me realize that I never actually cared about the force or Jedi or any of that. I just liked the Han and Chewbacca parts. Smugglers and bounty hunters and dive bars and such. Now I just watch Firefly or Ice Pirates instead and skip the pseudo-mystic hokum.

    1. If you're trying to be Internet Cool™, you've failed miserably.

    2. That's ok, that just means you aren't a person.

    3. yeah, not a great fan, either. love the first one, but never really warmed to the other two, and by the time they got around to the prequels I'd stopped caring entirely.

    4. Yeah, I'm totally with you on this. From the very first film, I saw it as an attempt at a pseudo-religion, and disliked it not because of that speciifically, but because of all the rabid fans who did not see it as such, and yet talked about "The Force" as if it was the coolest thing ever and a fresh idea. It is not a fresh idea, never was, it's just a rehash of pseudo-mysticism, just like you said. Just trading one set of beliefs for another one. And yes, Firefly is more adult, more political, and more thought-provoking, without pushing a quasi-religion. In my opinion.

    5. 4:53 - d'you mean that George Lucas was trying to push his version of scientology in 1977 (midichlorians rather than thetans) or... did you have a coincidental aneurism the first time you watched it?

  4. Speak for yourself, pally. We don't all like it.

    1. It's true. I've met people who don't like Star Wars. They didn't hate it, they were just indifferent.

    2. Well, then you aren't really a person. You're either a moron or a troll...probably both.

    3. A moron and/or a troll just because they don't like Star Wars? Well... someone round here's a moron, at any rate.

  5. People liking it doesn't change what it is and it doesn't make it less nerdy.

    1. Yeah. Why is "nerdy" = "unpopular". Lot's of "nerdy"things are popular and well known...

    2. I see you using the word 'nerdy', but I don't think it means what you think it means.

    3. Well Spiffy, video games could be seen as "nerdy" but lot's of people play video games... or read comics... or watch shows like Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica or Dr Who etc.

  6. It's because Star Wars is the go-to movie someone mentions having seen/loved when someone you wouldn't expect to like "nerdy" things declares themselves a nerd. I'm not saying it's wrong, it's just something I noticed.

  7. Didn't you hear? "Nerdy" means cool now.

  8. There's a difference between "like" and "obsess over."
It's subtle, granted, but it's there.

  9. AFAIK, Star Wars has ALWAYS been a very popular film, so...

  10. I was 16 when the original Star Wars film was released. It was unique, in that no film before had ever hit the mass popularity that Star Wars had. I guess one could argue that "The Wizard of Oz" had that large, mass appeal but by 1977 the media and manufacturers really knew how to sell their stuff to the public.

  11. I think the line is drawn at the movies. Loving the Star Wars movies (especially the originals, and the prequels for kids) is very mainstream and "normal". Obsessing over the extended universe is where is journeys into "nerdy" territory.

    1. Oh good. Glad you were here to clear that up. So I guess I now know I'm not nerdy cause I don't care about the extended universe. I mean, sure, I quote the movies all the time and could recite the stories start to finish but thank goodness I'm not nerdy.

    2. I think that if you're aware of the EU, even if you studiously ignore it, it counts for some nerd points. But then again, a friend of mine has told me that every nerd eventually reads the Zahn (?) trilogy of Star Wars novels, and there's no way in hell I'm ever doing that, so maybe don't put too much weight behind my definitions of nerdiness.

  13. It's the same thing as the mass public going to see The Avengers cuz its a cool action movie with lots of explosions ("shit gets blowed up") but if you knew that was Thanos at the end credits, you're a nerd

  14. I have been thinking the same for some time now. I don't want to be a snobby nerd, but Star Wars has been widely accepted by mainstream culture and is mass marketed across the globe. There are still some nerds within Star Wars who are really into it, but I dunno if liking Star Wars is really nerdy anymore. Personally the prequels and bow big those were pushed on us and a whole generation of kids really tainted the franchise for me.

Then again I am a nitpicky nerd that insists that Star Wars is not science fiction. It is fantasy in space. It is fantasy dressed up as sci fi. At most maybe a hybrid of the two. Yet it is not straight up sci fi like Star Trek. Nothing wrong with not being SF, but people just toss terms around without thinking.
