While discussing relationships...

  1. I can see his point. If you were a professional chef and a girl said to you "Oh I'm a chef too! I make Mac and Cheese and instant Ramen all the time!" You'd probably be offended too.

    1. Except the part when you actually need to have skill to be a chef, whereas you only need will to be a gamer :)

    2. You also need time and practice in both cases.

    3. It's not like the word "pro-gamer" was used.

    4. And the fact of the dumping due to the misuse of the term "gamer" is a lame... No? We're just gonna get irate about what the definition of "gamer" is? Mkay...

    5. "And the fact of the dumping due to the misuse of the term "gamer" is a lame... No?"

No means no, even if the one saying no says it because he's turned off by her taste in games. He doesn't owe her staying her boyfriend when he's turned off by her.

  2. And of course Mr. Superfan didn't see it as an opportunity to broaden her horizons. I really don't get the troo gamers v. poseurs dichotomy, least of all when it's used to bludgeon women in a sphere that has historically been a lonely sausage fest. It's the same mentality as the hipster who squawks about how he liked such-and-such a band before it was cool, but gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry. Vast swaths of it are totally mainstream and commercial, so the indie posturing is pretty laughable.

    1. Or to have his horizons broadened by any non-gamer stuff she's into. Sad...

    2. Well, girls don't do anything that is worthwhile apparently.

  3. I don't know why all the fine warrior poets who comment on these strips can't for a second imagine a person might be facetious or joking.

    1. Well the labels for this is "jerks" and "crazies". So since we weren't there to hear his tone of voice, the assumption must be that he wasn't joking, he was just being a jerk.

  4. Ugh, I hate gamers so much.

  5. http://www.addictinginfo.org/2012/09/03/city-of-heroes-being-shut-down/ This is somehow worse, as this dude has the unmitigated gall to liken the shutdown of an MMO to the Arab uprising..

  6. When I'm getting really sweet for a girl, I sit her down in front of Dark Souls. If she can't get past the Asylum Demon, we're done.

    1. And what would you do if her criteria for dating you, would be to read all of Jane Austen's ouvre?

    2. Ask her if she's still suffering from culture shock after traveling through about two centuries in her time machine.

  7. Ahh, it seems you had one of the fine commenters from Kotaku in your store, you lucky dog!

  8. I can easily believe that it was the reason they broke up because he doesn't say who did the breaking. I imagine it was his rant on what a gamer was that did it.

  9. Ha! -Reminds me of the first episode of Holliston where the guy broke up with his girlfriend because she had never seen the movie Gremlins. "I mean, she doesn't even know the three rules! -It's dangerous!!!"

  10. All of my this.

  11. I dunno, I could see that being annoying. "I saw Expendables 2! I'm such a film buff!" "Man, I'm such a foodie, I totally love going to Denny's." "I'm a total bookworm! I've read Twilight like five times!"

  12. If you prefer your left hand to someone who calls themselves a gamer just because they like Angry Birds, you deserve what you get.

so... this guy's ex-girlfriend is morgan webb?

    1. You're kidding me, right? Webb plays fifty times the games I and even my 'gamer' friends do. I feel like such a casual fan compared to what she plays and talks about.

  15. This says sooooo much about 'gamer' culture and gender roles therein.

Of course I'd arguing that it's just silly to label yourself a 'gamer'. Video games are mainstream now. Casual games like Angry Birds are still video games. Never mind more console and 'regular' games are also mainstream. I really scratch my head when people feel like 'gamer' is some kinda label. We don't label people who go to movies as being such 'cinemaphiles'. Everyone goes to see movies. And now, everyone plays video games.

At best you can identify as a nerd for a specific genre like J-RPGs or the Fallout series or Katamari. Yet to call yourself just a 'gamer'? That's like labeling yourself a 'reader' because you like books.

Sadly.. reading comic books remains pretty niche relatively, even with all these comic book and superhero films. Certainly comic cons are much smaller than gaming cons.

    1. People who really like books and movies do have labels. Bookworm, bibliophile, and movie buff, for example.

As with any interest, there are hardcore fans and casual fans. To call someone who only plays Angry Birds a "gamer" is like calling someone who has read Dr. Seuss a "bibliophile." There's nothing wrong with Dr. Seuss or Angry Birds, but they aren't exactly enough to give you a very knowledgeable perspective of their respective mediums as a whole.

I like movies and books. But I'm not interested enough in either of them to apply those labels to myself.

  16. Welp, that was probably your last chance to get laid. It takes commitment to choose upholding the proper elitist terminology of your hobby over having a love life; I hope you don't regret anything thirty or forty years down the road.
