I, for one, LOVE it when I tell a hipster that I like something that they like. The look on their face when they realize that they can't like that thing anymore because it's too mainstream gives me eyegasms.
I liked dinosaurs before the Jurassic Park movie came out. At 2 years old I knew what a stegosaurus was. I was angry when everyone started liking dinosaurs. But I was a kid. This guy looks.. too old to think like that. o_O
People like this mistake their interests for having a personality. So the second everyone likes things they like they realize they're no longer "Special" and are in fact incredibly boring people.
Now this is something that I just don't understand. The whole allure of the internet, is that I get to discuss stuff that I like, with OTHER people who also like it, and we have ourselves just a fine old time.
IMO, people with this attitude have NOTHING to contribute to society, to others lives. They have no talents, no abilities, no ideas. All they have are things they like. By having the attitude, that ONLY they can like something, they feel as if they had some hand in it's creation. Once others agree that they like it too, well, then they no longer have sole ownership of it (or so they think). Their only recourse is now to hate it.
This is a common attitude. How many times have you heard people complain that their (formerly) favorite band has "sold out" when they have a popular song?
I prefer to think that when a favorite band has a popular song it just means that the general populace is finally getting good taste in music, although that can be just as stupid a thought, too.
You must be a receptive psychic. That's exactly what I was thinking. Or maybe Go-Bots is just the obvious solution to his dilemma. Or Jabberjaw. He's probably safe liking Jabberjaw.

ReplyDeleteeven by the standards of OVC.
He doesn't REALLY like Transformers anyway. A REAL fan would have a tattoo, none of this pussy shirt nonsense.

What if we all told him we like living...
ReplyDeleteWouldn't work. He'd just go on living, but hating it.

ReplyDeleteI think that's a very perceptive way of looking at it.

ReplyDeleteAw, do we have to?
Delete+1 Internets to both of you.
