To her boyfriend...

  1. Yes, it would truly be awful to actually enjoy something.

  2. HA! -What really scares ME about The Watchmen prequels is the JMS helmed ones. Really??? -Straczynski? Because his most recent DC works have been exemplary! *cough*
I don't know who is more overrated: him or Brian Michael Bendis...

    1. Straczynski is slightly more overrated than Bendis, but neither one holds a candle to Grant Morrison, who is the most overrated writer of all time, in any medium or genre.

    2. Reading a person compare Morrison to Straczynski is causing me physical pain.

    4. Nah, I reread All Star Superman and felt a lot better.

    5. It's true: his work does have a numbing effect.

  3. Am I the only one who feels really sorry for Marvel right now? First DC's relaunch completely eclipses them, then they fight back by announcing AvX, one of the most marketable comics of the last decade. And now DC responds by saying, "lol, Watchmen prequels" and AvX looks like a minor blip on the radar by comparison.

Anyhoo, I probably won't buy them. They might well be good but I'm pretty content with Watchmen as it stands.

    1. What, you don't think their response of "Spider-MEN" has merit?

    2. I feel sorry for DC. Marvel are laughing all the way to the bank with box-office takings, and DC still haven't figured out how to make a good superhero movie that ISN'T Batman or Superman.

  4. I think Marvel is doing just fine. I've gone back and forth between marvel and dc over the years and Marvel always holds my interest longer. I tried a bunch of the new DC books and have dropped almost all of them other than the w books I was already reading.

AvX doesn't really have me that excited because some of the biggest names in the xmen ARE avengers now too (Beast, Wolverine, Storm). But, book-to-book I enjoy marvel much more than DC. I feel like the Marvel creators are having fun making their books, and I think that shows in their product.

  5. As Alan Moore said: "The worst thing about the Watchmen Prequels is that they're being made."

  6. Yeah! Liking things @#$@%@ing sucks!!!!!

  7. Can someone explain something to me? I haven't heard about the Watchmen prequels until now. Was there some sort of a massive fan outcry "we need prequels to Watchmen!"? Did someone decide "you know, that Watchmen thing was pretty much perfect, but we REALLY need to see the stories only hinted at in the book"? Is there any reason, other than a desire to make money (with which, by the way, I'm totally in agreement) for these to be made?

  8. Two things: First, OVC is definitely my FAVE webcomic/blog/whatever of all the ones I follow. Mr. Tim, this one (like so many you do) really knocks it out of the ballpark for me.
Secondly, though I was initially completely opposed to the whole Prequels idea, I just read an article on the controversy where J. Michael Straczynski definitely makes some compelling points on the pro-prequel side, especially one where he points out that Moore himself writes new material for complete/"done" characters in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. http://geekout.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/03/prequel-to-a-classic-before-watchmen/

  11. I'm worried they will turn out like Star Wars episode 1 through 3. :(

  12. Meh. I won't buy them in singles, since I just don't do that anymore, but I'll read Pre-Watchmen in it's collected format. It's tough, but sometimes I can let go of the eighties and see what new minds can do with an old idea. Besides, Alan Moore seems to have forgotten that he didn't actually make up most of the characters he used in Watchmen to begin with. Not really.

  13. Personally, I'm opposed to the Watchmen prequels only because everything you needed to know about the universe and the characters in it were in the book itself (as well as those pages of filler that ran at the end of each issue/chapter). All the stuff the prequels will be telling us will either be things we already knew (arguably enough) about, or things that aren't going to be of much relevance to the plot of the original comic itself. Why do we need to know any more about Rorschach's past than what the original comic gave us? What about Nite Owl II? Or the original Minutemen? We know everything necessary to understanding the original graphic novel, this is just pointless filler and a blatant attempt to make money. Still, I'm not going to stop anyone from buying it. Hell, if they end up liking it enough I'll give it a try. I just don't think we NEED to have them.

  15. Mrtim I like ovc quite a bit and I make sure to read it every couple of days.
But, honestly, it would so improve if you could refrain from using the tags "dopes", "jerks", "crazies", "jus folks" liberally. I can get a joke and the implications on my own, thank you very much. And I didn't even mention how exaggerating they can sound, like this one for instance.

  16. Based on the initial preview art I saw, I wasn’t worried that I’d like it.

However, I recently saw some Night Owl preview artwork by Joe Kubert that looks pretty good. So now my worry is that I’ll cave in and decide to try it, but because it’s the only one with good art, it’ll be sold out.
