I was really disappointed with the series after hearing all the hype online. Yet somehow I had to keep reading to see if it got better. It didn't. It really is just faux Hunter Thompson, without any of the charm that makes Thompson fun to read in the first place.
Um, anybody who knows comics, knows about it. Do people still think they are the only ones who know about edgy/indie/underground (etc, etc) things? Sorry, you're not.
Man, I was reading this one thing by Grant Morrison... you probably haven't heard of him. Class 2 felony to own one of his comics. But I got a special license.
At my store: "hey guys I'm looking for something really tough to find, I would say impossible maybe. I really don't think you have it" us: "yes what is it"??? guy: "it's called Kingdom Come" us: .... Here... have 5 copies...
The idea that something is edgy or indie is relative to what you've already been experienced to, and most importantly, what you take for granted as normal.
I really only thought that people said things this blatantly ridiculous when they were making fun of hipsters. (Whatever the hell "hipster" has come to mean in this day and age.) I mean, I guess the template had to come from somewhere, but humor at the expense of these people has become so prevalent that you'd think at some point they would stop and go, "Wait a minute! I sound like those Disney princess with the square-rimmed glasses Photoshopped on. I should re-evaluate my life!"
I don't really get the hate for Transmet. In this day and age it may not be edgy (at least comparatively), but it's a very competent and thematically appropriate entry in the cyberpunk genre. That said, "underground," Vertigo is not.
A closed Transmet TPB has at least 8 edges
ReplyDeleteEdgy... and nobody has asked for it since 2002. At least in my store.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, he's not completely off his rocker. It's certainly more unique material than the typical spandex junkie is used to.
ReplyDeleteIt's still for manchildren, though.
ReplyDeleteEdgy? Tell me that you then handed him something very edgy and blew his fucking mind.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure even Barnes & Noble stocks TransMet.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen a comic shop NOT carry it.
ReplyDeleteMight just be the stores in my area.

ReplyDeleteAw come on people, don't fight pretention with pretention.
ReplyDeleteRightly said, Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteBarnes and Noble does indeed carry it, as does Borders.

ReplyDeleteBy "edgy" he means it gives you papercuts.

ReplyDeleteA hipster comic geek? That's a new one!

ReplyDeleteI like Transmet, but in all honesty it's about as edgy as a watermelon.
