that philistine! kids these days with their lack of appreciation for the many wonderful re-colored, gender-switched, alternate reality teenaged doppelganger variations of existing superhero characters which are the bedrock of comic book lore.
To be fair, this is a totally different Scarlet Spider, in that it's Kaine, who is a totally different clone of Peter Parker from the 90's Clone Saga, calling himself that. I...don't know if that makes it better or worse.
Thing is, not everyone agreed to that. Those that had an opinion were either like the customer, or they actually liked Ben Reilly and just wanted a better ending to the Clone Saga mess.
Fast forward 15 years and some say fans are starting to look back fondly at the things they used to rage over. I think it's that those on one side went silent as they tried to forget the whole thing happened while those on the other kept on clamoring for a triumphant return.
Yes, we did all agree but then people continued to have children and Marvel wisely realized that agreement was not binding with this new generation. Damn loopholes.
If I remember correctly, at that meeting we also all agreed that there would be no more needless reboots or retcons, no pointless crossovers, and no more "Death of..." fakeouts to temporarily boost sales with a "Return of..." miniseries to follow. Apparently no one stuck to those agreements, so why should this one be any different?
So did I, man. So did I.

ReplyDeleteWe all did, but Joe Quesada made a deal with Mephisto to retcon our agreement.
ReplyDeleteWe hate you, Joe!
I remember that meeting fondly.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, you gotta preserve the trademark.

The original Scarlet Spider was a small pool of awesome in the giant ocean of fail that was the clone saga.
If only the rumours were true and the Scarlet Spider had been Mary-Jane Watson... :(
ReplyDeleteI didn't even know Justin Long read Spider-Man!

ReplyDeleteThat's what happens when you use bug spray, some times they come back. Next time use a shoe and get a kill confirmed "crunch".
