I've been a regular at GBFans since 2000. And while the IDW Ghostbusters series has been hit or miss, I've collected as many as I can get my hands on. I've been trying to build my own proton pack off and on for the past few years, but I've been thwarted by financial woes and my own ineptitude when it comes to building things. This year I might just finish off something slapdash and worry about building a better one later.
I have decent-sized a collection of Ghostbusters merchandise. I bought a bunch of custom LEGO parts and made Ghostbusters minifigurines of my wife and myself. When Harold Ramis died, my wife and I picked up Twinkies in his honor. Ghostbusters has honestly been my favorite movie since its release when I was a child. In other words, I think my fan credentials are in order.
And do you know what I think about people just getting into Ghostbusters for the 30th, or maybe now just re-discovering what a good movie it was? I think that's awesome. That's what I think. It means more people to talk about Ghostbusters with. It means maybe the guy at the hardware store might know what I'm talking about when I go there to buy proton pack parts.
There's more than enough room for old fans, new fans, hardcore fans and casual fans. When the re-release comes around, it might be one person's 500th time watching the film and it might be another person's first. And they're probably both going to enjoy it just as much. Fandom isn't turf to defend.
But I'll tell you another thing. I have sort of an ulterior motive here. If Ghostbusters gets really, really popular again, maybe Hi-C will finally bring back Ecto Cooler.
So... this guy isn't a hipster because there's no such thing as liking Ghostbuster "before it was cool!. It always was. But there HAS to be a word for those people like him? Fanster, maybe? o_O

Casual
DeleteMy god. Ecto Cooler. Even after all these years, I can still remember how great it was. I'd strangle a litter of kittens for a case of Ecto Cooler.
DeleteEcto Cooler was pretty darned good they could have lost the product tie in and just renamed it and I'd have still bought the stuff.
DeleteI saw the movie in theater on my ninth birthday. So there are two takeaways:
ReplyDelete1.) I've been a fan longer than you, dick. And
2.) Damn, I'm getting old.
"NOBODY LIKES [insert anything here] BUT MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

"Asshole". The word is "asshole".
DeleteI'm almost 4 months younger than the original Ghostbusters. Oh God.
ReplyDeleteWell, apparently dickless here doesn't want people liking Ghostbusters. Too bad he's thirty years too late.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's true.... That man has no dick.
