The worst part about it is that the new Robocop could be salvages by making all of the body armor or whatevs silver/chrome/whatever, so it at least channels the original Robocop a little bit.
There was just one set pic, so it goes without saying that the Internet overreacted about it. In the pic, his fingers aren't completely covered.
I think it doesn't look incredible, but if you want the old Robocop, that's like wanting to ride in a car from the 40s. Sure, it might've been well made, but it's also a design that doesn't fit with how far we've come.
With all respect, I don't think your comparison stands. Look at a tank for WW1 and a tank today, you can still tell it's a tank no matter how far we've come.
No matter how you put it, a tight and lightly padded/armored jumpsuit does NOT fit with how it's supposed to be some sort of cyborg-robot.
P.S. Not the same Anonymous as above. I need to get me one of those things I can use to "reply as" one of these days... why doesn't msn work anyway? >.>
My comparison is that Robocop was cool based on what we saw as futuristic technology back then. Now our computers are much smaller, military armor is lighter and yet still protective, and I think that Robocop shouldn't be so bulky.
I think a lot of people want him to look the same just for geek conservation's sake, but this is not the change I fear.
Maybe it will look better with a reflective post-production cgi overlay, right now it just looks like someone saw Batman's armour from the Dark Knight trilogy and said "That'll do."
I think I'll be able to deal with some completely ditching the visual aesthetic if they just stay true to the premise of Robocop. He's the first cyborg. He's not an iPhone 5s. He's a clunky prototype put together by Alexander Graham Bell.
This Robocop at first glance looks like he's a product that's ready for the mass market. I'm hoping that's not the case.
Original Robocop was boxy like a 1980s American made automobile because he is as much in the tradition of the auto industry as he is in the robot tradition. He's the Motor City's Motor Man, a concept car never truly ready for mass production.
The design of the remade Robocop fits perfectly in with the mindset of the previous one. It's shiny, black, super sleek, and nobody asked for it. Play Eminem's Lose Yourself as he walks downtown under the streetlights and you've got a real 21st century Chrysler moment.
It's more like the original Robocop was designed to look like a machine with a few bits and pieces of a person inside it (I mean we all know it was just a costume, but at least they tried).
This new "Robocop" seems to have forgotten the "robo" and just looks like a costume with a whole person inside it. It looks like a suit, not a machine.
tl;dr: No way I'm wasting good money to see this remake.
Oh, snap! Speak of the Robo <a href="http://wwtdd.com/2012/10/the-new-robocop-delivers-on-robot-cop-promise/>www.wwtdd.com/2012/10/the-new-robocop-delivers-on-robot-cop-promise/</a>
I've never been that crazy about RoboCop but he's a universally recognizable image. I can't see any sense in changing him into something unrecognizable. People complained about the redesigned Transformers, but they were at least *reminiscent* of the famous designs.
The rumor I've heard is that the picture shown isn't actually robocop himself, but the standard New Detroit riot gear for ordinary humans, and that robocop (who will not look like a non-stick Iron Man with a Daft Punk helmet) simply resembles the shape of said standard issue riot gear.
Could be, but unlike the alleged Iron Patriot that turned out to be War Machine in Iron Man 3, I read that the set pic of Robocop is indeed Robocop, and it was not taken back. T%he first pic looks way less detailed and interesting than the new pic.
A costume that deliberately reflects the increasingly shiny, slick action-figure-like heroes of the era in which it was made(the 2010s), probably to a satirical level?
Yeah, "that shit ain't Robocop". What they need to do is make him look exactly like the 80s version. Because that's what Robocop was REALLY about. I mean.... the "It's True" tag is right there, so....

Original Anonymous here.
DeleteI actually think the design is alright as it's clearly supposed to channel SWAT or Riot cops.
I just think the all black rubber suit look is boring visually and looks like it's aping on the whole Batman thing.
If only he were wrong...

It's true.
I bet he's gonna do a lot of Matrix-Fu, too. Just you watch!

That actually makes perfect sense. I'll have to keep that in mind as more information comes out about the remake.

DeleteWhaaaaaat....No Nipples? Sheesh!
ReplyDeleteI was about to complain about the "it's true" tag, but then I saw the picture... it's true.
ReplyDeleteNext thing you know, Robocop will be able to move faster than 1 mph. RIDICULOUS!
ReplyDelete"Feels like I'm wearin' nothin' at all! Nothin' at all! Nothin' at all..."

ReplyDeletePeople complain about sunshine, but what it all comes down to is if you pay money to see that movie, and if you pay for it on b-r/DVD

DeleteThat ain't Robocop
ReplyDeleteI hope they haven't changed his signature helmet design to a Recon Helmet...

Wait a minute, he’s got a human hand! I thought we agreed on total body prosthesis!
