So... he would have liked it better if he was actually just an abused kid forced to live in a cupboard desperately trying to escape his own crushing reality?
....I liked the It was All Just a Dream ending to Roseanne. Because the last season SUCKED and I felt punched in the gut when in reality we're told Dan died.
Also, it was all just a dream is my interpretation of the ending of Inception, too...
I think the whole series was Harry's final thoughts as he is beaten to death by his abusive father, until finally he is dragged out of his body and down to Hell.
Or what if it was a dream within a dream? And he was dreaming about this fantastic world in order to escape the mental asylum they stuck him in for shooting his stepfather? And then he wakes up just as the jet engine crashes through the roof of his house and kills him? Wait, what were we talking about again?
I don't know about "better" but it definitely would've been funnier. All these people (myself included, I'll admit) get all emotionally invested in this character over, what...ten years? And the ending is, "oh, by the way, none of this really happened; he was still and orphan, and nobody loved him. The end."
Would I have felt incredibly cheated? Yes. But I would've gotten over it, and I would've laughed my ass off every time I thought about it for years.
You know what would have been cool? If at the end Harry Potter leaves the theatre and it turns out it was all just a movie made out of a book series. That would have been awesome.
"Taking it to a darker place" If this movie was supposed to raise awareness of child abuse. He's dies under his aunts and uncles staircase, that this all has been a hallucination from malnutrition.
Someone I work with suggested that the whole thing would have just been a test. So when he defeats Voldemort, Dumbledore comes up and says "you just passed your final exam."
Sometimes I wish it had been all a dream, the series never caught on, and the kids had discovered the Books of Magic instead, and they'd made movies from that. Tim Hunter forever!
Wow, guy should be quit his job and review movies.
ReplyDeleteSomeone older than kindergarten think the "...and it was all just a dream" ending is actually good?
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant idea! I'm surprised no one has thought of that before.
ReplyDeleteThe first time I beat Super Mario Bros 2 and found out the game was just a dream I WAS PISSED! Probably a little more than I should have been.
ReplyDeleteIf only Snape woke and it was all HIS dream.

ReplyDeleteWhat a creep.
...What?

ReplyDeleteI'll go out on a limb here, and say that the "...and it was all just a dream" ending to Newhart was actually good.
Thousands of St. Elsewhere fans would disagree with your statement.

Yeah, and then he finds Patrick Duffy taking a shower in his bathroom.
ReplyDeleteActually, yeah. It would've been better yet if the whole franchise was only a dream.
ReplyDeleteSooooo, this guy must think the cop-out in MGM's Wizard of Oz movie was the BEST THING EVAR.
ReplyDeleteIt's spelled 'ever'. Never understood that preteen fad.
ReplyDeleteI think the whole series was Harry's final thoughts as he is beaten to death by his abusive father, until finally he is dragged out of his body and down to Hell.
ReplyDelete... and Harry is really a 35 year old virgin living in his mother's basement.

@Sorceror: No, you're confused, that's Harry Potter FANS.
ReplyDeleteI disagree, Harry Potter would have better benefited from a snowglobe pullback.
ReplyDeletewhy don't they make a new version of 'the phantom toll booth'?
ReplyDelete"This is an Imaginary Story... Aren't they all?"

ReplyDeleteDid the head writer for Lost just pay a visit to your shop?
ReplyDeleteI enjoy thinking about how the Potter series would have turned out if G.R.R. Martin had written it. Who would have lived to see the last book...
ReplyDeleteSometimes I wish I could wake up and realise Harry Potter was all just a dream.
ReplyDeleteYou know what would have been awesome? If the movie ended with Samuel L. Jackson recruiting Harry for the Avengers.
ReplyDelete"You did't think you were the only wizard in the world, do you? Oh wait, you never did. My bad."
