Well, the cover does show both Betty and Veronica in wedding dresses. I guess not everyone realizes he's making a choice between the two (and the choice is obvious, unless Mr. Lodge makes him sign a prenup).
Actually, if somebody isn't familiar with how decades of stories have spun out of Archie's inability to decide between Betty and Veronica, it's hard not to see the cover as a story about polygamy. Knowing that it was an Archie comic, it was pretty easy to guess the gist of the cover from his statements.
I'm torn here too. On the one hand he's overreacting. On the others: Mormons have a very BAD civil rights record AND it makes me happy to think people are finally FORGETTING Archie comics.
Seems to me that the real issue isn't that he got the wrong idea from the book, but that he's angry about something that isn't a problem. What other mormon propaganda? And honestly, what hipster dingus really gives a shit about it?
Despite being fully aware of the ACTUAL meaning of the cover (being the hypothetical choice between one or the other, not a polygamous marriage), now that I really stop and think about it, I can't help but think that Archie marrying BOTH of them would actually solve a lot of their problems. Betty and Veronica would stop bickering over him, and Archie wouldn't have to worry about ruining his friendship with either girl by marrying the other.
Though, if I had to choose between one or the other based on that cover, I'd have to go with Veronica. I understand that Betty is a tomboy, but seriously, if you take away that veil and the bouquet, she could easily be mistaken as a bridesmaid-- or, worse, the flower girl, if you removed the heels and put her in a pair of flats.
Aw crap, I completely over-thought something again >< I'm just gonna stop now before I write a term paper on this comic.... (and yes, just so we're clear, I *am* female, hence the in-depth analysis of the wedding attire)
Ummm... you guys do realize that Mainstream mormonism stopped practicing polygamy over 100 years ago, right? There's a couple small break-off sects, like the Fundamentalist mormons that were in the news a while ago, but they broke off because the church ended polygamy. Also, Muslims practice polygamy, so, by his standards, how do you know it's not Muslim propoganda?
What I find amusing are people acting surprised that Archie comics still exist when they routinely sell upwards of 250,000 copies an issue, while most mainstream bestsellers struggle to reach 100k...
As a Fundamentalist Mormon I must say that this is one funny cartoon. I'm gonna print this one out for the wives. Thanks for the inadvertent shout out, MRTIM.
What? Canadian mormons are trying to get polygamy legalized? That is so not approved by the church. I'm a mormon, and creepy fundies wig me out so very much. They have such dead, brainwashed eyes. Normal mormons are normal.
Comparing all of us Fundamentalist Mormons to the FLDS is as ignorant as comparing all Germans to the Nazis. Most of us are as "normal" as any of you. The FLDS are an extremist group that is extremely inbred. They give us a bad name like the Taliban does to all other Muslims. When Hugh Hefner practices polygamy with women less than half his age, it is a hit reality TV show. Should he love those girls and treat them as wives, all of a sudden it is a felony? Huh? What goes on between consenting adults is nobodies business but their own, including gays. Please don't compare Fundamentalist Mormons to the homophobic LDS church. We support each others goals to legalize our respective lifestyles.
Jesus decided to stop polygamy in 1890, not long after the church president had called for an end to it, paving the way for Utah to become a state and preventing the U.S. government from seizing the church's assets. Now that's perfect timing.
given the way we're getting more tolerant on such things, it is likely that polygamy might eventually be allowed over time and there are some people for whom that would work.
most of the anime, comic and manga characters that people like to put into polygamus relationships wouldn't manage it, however.
About the only one that I can think of which would work is Ayeka, Ryoko and Tenchi and even then only if your talking the original OAVs. And that's because there's a lot of sexual tension and flirting being done between the girls as well as from the girls to Tenchi.
But, really, I can't really think of any other fictional situation (outside of Wheel of Time) were a polygamus relationship would be acceptable to the people being put into it.
I'd be interested to hear what he things Buddhists believe.

ReplyDeleteWell, there WERE the old Archie CHRISTIAN comcis by Al Hartley...
ReplyDeleteTo be fair this is one of the cases where I can actually see where the guy is coming from.
ReplyDeleteIn these tumultuous times, it's heartening to see that some people are getting indignant over the REAL problems....
ReplyDeleteDid his shirt really say "Fake Retro Beer Shirt"? Because if so, I want one.

Whoa...back up...they're still making comics about Archie, Betty, and Veronica?
ReplyDeleteThough Mr.Tim was there and I was not, I'm guessing that our valued customer of the day was being facetious about the cover.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, Archie. My very first exposure as a child to the world of fandom ship wars.
ReplyDeleteWhat I find amusing is the implication that Mormons have a sinister child-targeting propaganda machine.

ReplyDeleteAnon@1:37 - I don't know about you, but I think the wedding dresses themselves are a dead giveaway that it isn't Muslim propaganda.
ReplyDeleteI thought this marriage thing already happened over a year ago? It was in the news as much as the Death of Superman back in '93.
ReplyDeleteI think this is one of my favourite MRTIM comics to date. His gaze is SO INTENSE.
ReplyDeleteHi I want to go to your store and say some crazy thing on purpose just to see if you make a comic about it.
ReplyDeleteAs a Fundamentalist Mormon I must say that this is one funny cartoon. I'm gonna print this one out for the wives. Thanks for the inadvertent shout out, MRTIM.
ReplyDeleteIn Canada Mormons are fighting to get polygamy legalized just as Mormons in California fought to have gay marriage banned.
ReplyDeleteI think you guys are being reactionary and this fellow depicted was probably being "clever" around his GF.
When you wrote "being reactionary", did you mean "overreacting"? They don't mean the same thing, and "reactionary" makes no sense in this context.
ReplyDeleteEven though polygamy was only practiced for about 50 years the stereotype is not going to go away.
